Unit 5: How People Focus Their Attention
From this chapter, Weinschenk pointed out that people can focus the best at about seven minutes. People tend to pay attention the three things the most: Food, Sex and Danger. It is really funny that she mentioned about how everytime we drove by an accident or crime scene, we always slow down and look at the scene. We are naturally "created" to pay attention about safety. Our old brain forced us to do so, which it demand us to pay attention to our basic survival skills.
Weinschenk also mentioned that people tend to stick to their own routine then they would learn to ignore other things. If someone does something so frequently, he or she will tend to focus on what they are doing, then miss out a lot of information on the side.
To grab people's attention, a presenter can use a story; try to relate the information to sex, danger or food. It is not necessary for one to do so, but if one did that, one will get a lot of information.
